Gaultier, Jean- Paul 1952- Designer. He was born in Paris France. He first was inspired by fashion at the age of fourteen. At seventeen he sent out his sketches to several major designers. He was then invited by Pierre Cardin to join his company for only one year.Gaultier gained popularity in the 1970’s by designing clothes that where in punk style and flea market dressing. One of his most important contributions to fashion is the focus he placed on the bust line in the 1980’s. Gualtier liberated the outmoded corset as an undergarment and recreated it as outwear. Gaultier is known for mixing old and new fabrics and cuts. His clothes are typically humorous, showy and extremely clever. Known for mixing tomboy with film glamor.
